Fall Prevention

Fall prevention is essential, especially for those over the age of 65. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries among elderly adults. At least 10% of falls may lead to severe injuries, such as head wounds and hip fractures. Along with physical pain, these incidents can also cause emotional distress, as some patients may end up spending months away from home while recovering in a long-term care facility.

What Is Balance Testing?

The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that process the sensory information involved with controlling balance and eye movements. If a disease or injury damages these processing areas, this can result in vestibular disorders. Our videonystagmography (VNG) testing equipment assesses the balance system and inner ear for trauma or genetic deficiencies, which often result in the need for rehabilitation therapy.

With state-of-the-art equipment, such as the VNG test, we can perform comprehensive balance testing to assist patients who have experienced the following conditions:

  • Dizziness

  • Concussions

  • Migraines

  • Hip and knee replacements

  • Head trauma or a traumatic brain injury

  • Motion sickness

  • Autoimmune disease

  • Sensorineural hearing loss

  • Mal de debarquement syndrome

  • Chemotherapy or radiation treatment

  • Tinnitus

  • Fall risk

The Importance of Balance Testing

Balance testing is essential because the associated issues affect hundreds of thousands of people every year. According to the CDC, approximately 800,000 individuals have a stroke every year in the U.S., which is often signified by dizziness, mobility issues, and loss of balance. Additionally, more than 40% of adults over the age of 40 experience dizziness or vertigo at some point in their lives.

As a result of these sicknesses and other balance issues, approximately 646,000 individuals die from falls in the U.S. every year. These conditions require sophisticated medical treatments and therapy. High Level Speech & Hearing offers the comprehensive hearing and balance evaluations necessary to determine your risk of falling, as well as treatments and therapies that reduce these risks.
