The Importance of Healthy Speech and Hearing for Musicians

According to the National Institute of Health, hearing loss is the third most common chronic disease in the United States. It affects many musicians, including Eric Clapton and Huey Lewis, because they are regularly exposed to dangerous noise levels. Sounds of 85 decibels or higher can cause immediate and permanent hearing loss. For context, according to Signia, a drum set can reach 100 decibels, an amplified guitar can reach 106 decibels, and the speakers at a rock concern can blast sounds at 120 decibels or higher. Ongoing exposure to loud noises for many years can exacerbate musicians' hearing problems. The louder the sound, the more quickly noise-induced hearing loss can develop. This serious condition requires advanced medical treatment and therapy because hearing loss can worsen with time and exposure without the proper protective devices.
